Auston Matthews to Vegas and why it makes sense
I think rumours aside I do speculate on this because the Toronto Maple Leafs are in a downward spiral. But from where the Leafs are now they pretty much should hold onto Tavares, Nylander and Rielly for guidance in the future of that team. I see them being cornerstones of that franchise if Matthews were to leave. If Matthews is gone, Tavares could be captain again and I think he was more passionate about wearing it for them. As for the rest of the Toronto Maple Leaf players, I think they should trade just about all of the players possible.
As for Auston Matthews, I think his time in Toronto is coming to an end on his behalf and I feel a change of scenery as well as being on a new team would work well for him. Rumours have swirled around him waiving to Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose or Utah. I know he'd for sure go to Arizona if they had a team, but I think if he's going anywhere it's the Vegas Golden Knights.
I'm sure whoever is reading this is thinking, 'How? They don't have the cap space.'
Well... they're going to give everything they got to land Auston Matthews because him going to Vegas to be reunited with Marner and for Vegas to have the captain of not just a storied franchise, but also Team USA on that team it'll give Vegas the look they want where that they win now and only now. Aside from goaltending, adding a face of the league as big as Matthews will show the entire NHL who Vegas truly is and what they're aiming for. Vegas will do it if given the chance.
But that bares the question: what will they give?
Trevor Connolly would be a big part of this trade, and it's worth noting Vegas doesn't have a first-round pick until 2028, but they would also likely need to add a first in 2029 and 2030 (something like that); or various second round picks, probably Adin Hill to make some wiggle room, and likely Ivan Barbashev or William Karlsson.
All that to say, I see Vegas also trading for a goaltender.
