Tortorella named head coach of Vegas Golden Knights and coaches on the hot seat.
This is the biggest news given it's almost April and the Golden Knights have fired their coach who led them to their first ever Stanley Cup just as the season came to an end. And not just that, they pick Tortorella who is one of the most controversial coaches present day. But I love this move for Vegas, but I don't think this is on Bruce Cassidy. I think this is on the management as they seem to always find something cool and shiny, and ditch whatever they can do in order to get that nice shiny thing.
It doesn't always work.
Now, it's not Marner's fault as some will be pointing the finger at him. But they need to appreciate their roster for what it is. I think this hiring of Tortorella will go in all sorts of ways, such as views of the players, management, media, and fans, which Tortorella can make happen in a lot of ways. I think he's going to have the team go in the direction he wants them to head. I think there will be a major shake-up for the Golden Knights in the off-season where certain players may leave and other big names come in. But I think this is a good move for the Golden Knights as they just took one big step forward.
As for Bruce Cassidy, I think he and Peter DeBoer will be some of the first coaches to find work quickly this off-season that being said Bruce will be just fine. But as for which team will hire him.
The current teams with their coaches on the hot seat is not just Foote with the Canucks which doesn't even need to be explained and should never been hired there in the first place because he could barely coach the Kelowna Rockets which in my opinion is a WHL team with very high expectations. But also Sheldon Keefe who I don't think gets let go, neither does Jim Montgomery in fact I think the Blues keep him on for a long time. I think Berube is kept a big longer because I don't think this season is his fault, but Brad Treliving is the one I personally blame because I don't think he's a good general manager and Toronto needs to bring in someone that can change them for the better.
Jeff Blashill won't likely get fired, but if he does it'll be mid-season next year as I think he's a coach who can't lift a team in through the playoffs on the biggest stage. I could be wrong, but Chicago has to make playoffs next year. I notice improvements which is why I think right now he's safe.
Andrew Brunette might be let go, but I think he's an excellent coach who did well taking over the Panthers and with Nashville turned that entire team around after playing awful in 2023-24. Sure they're not the best right now, but if Nashville does let him go he's a guy I'd go after and I think he'll get another NHL job.
Ryan Huska I don't think is an issue with Calgary, they just flat out suck. But I think if he's gone it'll be next season.
DJ Smith I doubt will remain the Kings head coach given they had a chance to make the playoffs and after he took over he hasn't even improved the team, but in fact has made them worse. Given his track record with Ottawa and even Toronto, I wouldn't touch him with a fifty foot pole. So I think they're the team who hires either Cassidy or DeBoer.
I don't think Scott Arniel gets fired because he has loyalty to the city of Winnipeg as it's his home and was there with the original Jets as a player, stayed in Winnipeg when the Jets relocated to Arizona in the IHL with the Manitoba Moose, returned to be a head coach with the Moose in the AHL before taking on a head coach job with the Blue Jackets before returning to Winnipeg as an associate coach with the Jets. Now, True North Sports and Entertainment have a history of being loyal to people with the Jets such as assistant GM Craig Heisinger whose been with the original Jets as an equipment manager before joining the Moose as an equipment manager that worked his way up to general manager of the Moose before being the assistant general manager of the Winnipeg Jets. So that's why Arniel likely doesn't get fired, not saying it isn't going to happen and I personally believe Arniel should have never been coach of the Jets, but I think he stays. If he does get let go it'll be as late as the end of the 2027-28 NHL Season.
