Why I think the Oilers should go after Jordan Binnington
After last night's only hockey game between the Oilers and Stars, the Oilers had the better odds to win going into that game. They got destroyed in the first period 4-0. In the last two periods they swapped Stuart Skinner with Calvin Pickard, where they lost the game 8-3. This game had been the ultimate wake-up call, and I think personally the problem here is the Oilers coaching staff, ownership, and finally their defense.
Calvin Pickard is a great goaltender, and I think if he deserves another chance at being a starting goaltender elsewhere. But I think the Oilers keep him and likely don't move on from him. As for Stuart Skinner, he is truly a remarkable goalie. The issue is the Oilers coaches and their defenseman Bouchard and Nurse. Bouchard, excellent offensively, but defensively not to much and he's another case of a player who'd benefit from a change of scenery. Except, I think Darnell makes the same mistakes his sister does in the PWHL -- and there was a lot of hype around her on the Toronto Sceptres.
St. Louis have been a bi-polar team since the departure of their captain Alex Pietrangelo, but it seems Jordan Binnington could use a fresh start and the Blues have nothing to lose. Joel Hofer could take over if the Blues have no goaltender in return.
Except, the only team I think would work is Edmonton. I think the Oilers should go after Binnington. I think this would also be a great experiment for the Oilers to see if it's a them problem, because I sure do think it's a them problem because their other goaltenders moved on and have done well like Anthony Stolarz, Laurent Brossoit, Cam Talbot, Devan Dubnyk, and I think Stuart Skinner joins that list; I think Jack Campbell makes a comeback later on in his career. Mike Smith was at the end of his career when he came to Edmonton because that was his final chance.
If Jordan Binnington were to join the Oilers, I would imagine it could bring Binnington some confidence to be a competitive player again and may bring hopes in the locker room for a potential Stanley Cup. Binnington was the starting goaltender in the four nations and is looking to be the starter at the Olympics for Team Canada. It reminds me of the situation between Luongo and the Panthers before trading him to the Canucks where he showed the hockey world how good he truly is.
But I imagine if it doesn't work out, Binnington walks with McDavid and the Oilers are back to where they were in the 2012-13 lockout season.
