The Winnipeg Jets need their history back
What I can't stand is seeing 'Jets 1.0' or 'Jets 2.0' and probably my biggest pet peeve in hockey. In the past the Jets had some memorable things in not just the NHL, but in hockey history. Most notably when Teemu Selanne broke the rookie record for most goals in a season previously set by the best goal scorer in NHL history, Mike Bossy. But in 1996, the Winnipeg Jets had relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, bringing the history with them. Now, the thing about this is when True North Sports and Entertainment and David Thomson bought the Atlanta Thrashers bringing them to Winnipeg, the Jets name was brought back. Except they took the Thrashers history with them, honouring the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy even going as far to have Connor Hellebuyck keep the number which the Thrashers decided to suspend; the Jets put a patch in Hellebuyck's jersey honouring Dan Snyder.
So, it is also rumoured Atlanta is returning, and I think the Jets would happily give their history back. But there's been a history of this in not just the NHL, but in the NFL, MLB, and NBA. For example, when the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore before getting a team back, the Ravens returned their history to them. When the Cleveland Barons folded, the Minnesota North Stars decided to honour their history before becoming the Dallas Stars. Now, when Ryan Smith decided to buy the Coyotes, he decided to not honour their history and it'd be all new. The Coyotes are now a defunct franchise, since the Jets returned they hadn't made the playoffs except in 2020 during the playoff bubble. The history is not relevant right now as they look like a team who folded, with some of hockeys richest history for a city that eat, breathes, and sleeps hockey, it's only fair for them to return their hockey history and maybe honour the Coyotes on the side. And if Phoenix ever gets another team again, Winnipeg could return their history back and keep theirs.
