Arthurs Silovs trade
Today, Arturs Silovs, who Canucks fans will remember from not just the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs but also the one who carried the Abbotsford Canucks to the Calder Cup Championship the following year. Silovs had high expectations going into the 2024-25 season after a great season, but last season didn't really go the way the Vancouver Canucks expected and reminded me a lot of the Ottawa Senators 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons where they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals and after that turned into a trainwreck that took seven years to recover from. But, understandably so, the Canucks signed Lankinen to an extension and unexpectedly signed Demko to an extension too.
What does Vancouver do? They trade Arturs Silovs to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in 2017.
On a Canucks standpoint, this trade almost describes the disappointing history of the Vancouver Canucks and believe they should've gotten something in the margin of a fourth-line NHL forward or bottom-pairing defenseman. From what I've seen from Stillman is he's not the kind of guy to crack the NHL roster, but knowing the Canucks there's a shot they call him up in case the trade makes them look stupid. But if Stillman was an NHL player he wouldn't have three points in nineteen AHL games, this is atrocious for the Canucks.
As for the Pittsburgh Penguins, this is highway robbery and I think they may have gotten a huge steal. I think Silovs could potentially take over as their starter, but I think Penguins fans should go easy on him if he takes over as their starter which I believe is possible. The fact he had five shutouts in the Calder Cup Playoffs and a consistent record in the Stanley Cup Playoffs tells me even though he has nineteen regular season games which I think are pretty good given he was playing for the Vancouver Canucks I think he has potential to be a starter and Pittsburgh needs a young goaltender. This is an excellent trade for the Penguins and good for Kyle Dubas.
