Predicting where the top thirty-one NHL free agents will land
This is taken from the ranking of the hockey writers.
30 - Brandon Saad - Florida 3 years x $2M AAV - I think when their other free agents leave, it leaves room to bring in a veteran and leader like Saad to make their contention a lot more stronger.
29 - Brian Dumoulin - San Jose 3 years x $2M AAV - Dumoulin would be a good pick-up for the Sharks.
28 - Victor Olofsson - Vegas 5 years x $4M AAV - He's been a great fit on Vegas and seemed quite happy there to be reunited with Jack Eichel.
27 - Corey Perry - Edmonton Oilers 1 year x $1M - Take a discount to remain playing for a team he's found a home for and purpose.
26 - Nate Schmidt - Vegas 1 year at $800K - I think he returns to a team he brought lots of value to at a hometown discount.
25 - James van Riemsdyk - Florida 1 year x $2M AAV - Another big piece for Florida to add to their veteran core.
24 - Andrew Mangiapane - Seattle Kraken 5 years x $5M AAV - Seattle gives him an opportunity to play in the top six at the right amount of cash. I think he'd look good next to Matty Beniers giving him his offensive spark back as they play at the exact same pace.
23 - Jack Roslovic - Tampa Bay 3 years x $2.5M AAV - Roslovic on a contending team where he doesn't have most of the pressure would likely be his best fit. Did great in Carolina, but I think he'll
22 - Connor Brown - Edmonton 3 years x $1.5M AAV - I think him not on the Oilers is a crime as he's shown value for that team off the ice, but can also step up when he needs to.
21 - Reilly Smith - Vegas 4 years x $4M AAV - I think Vegas needs him as he's provided a great foundation for the franchise and separating him from the Golden Knights isn't the best move.
20 - Evgenii Dadonov - Washington Capitals 4 years x $3M AAV - I think Dadonov on the Capitals will help them be a competitive team a lot more. I don't see anybody else signing him other than Washington.
19 - Andrei Kuzmenko - Los Angeles Kings 6 years x 5M AAV - He played well there and there's no reason to leave. Seemed to love it there.
18 - Jamie Benn - Dallas 3 years x $1.5M AAV - Benn has been a great leader, and I personally don't believe anybody could replace him as captain in Dallas. If that's the case, I see the Stars being a contending team in the next few seasons where they'd need to get it together. If anything, minus a Stanley Cup, Jamie Benn is the best captain in their franchises history.
17 - Dmitry Orlov - New Jersey 5 years x $5M AAV - Brings a valuable experienced presence to the Devils defensive core that can prepare them for the next step.
16 - Ivan Provorov - Carolina 8 years x $6M AAV - Carolina already adds onto their blue-line with a big signing to help them remain a competitive team. I also think this contract would look like overpay, but I think it'll be the biggest steal for Carolina.
15 - Jake Allen - Winnipeg 1 year x $1M AAV - Winnipeg needs an experienced back-up as I believe Eric Comrie isn't the guy to pull all the weight when Hellebuyck is down. I think Allen with his experience will be what Winnipeg needs to make it into the finals. They're pretty much complete with their addition of Toews and some may think it's much, but say Hellebuyck struggles in the playoffs Allen can likely handle the pressure.
14 - Pius Suter - Philadelphia 5 years x $4.5M AAV - Tocchet would likely try and bring one of his competitive centres to Philly who could play behind Couturier or step up but also can fit in any position while also being comfortable playing with Michkov. I think if this happens it turns out to be an excellent addition for the Flyers.
13 - Dante Fabbro - Vegas 1 year x $2M - I think Fabbro tries getting a chance on a contending team where he can show how good he can actually be, and I think Vegas could be his biggest shot.
12 - Vladislav Gavriokov - Los Angeles Kings 5 years x $5M AAV - There's no reason for him to leave LA. Was great with Drew Doughty, and also fit well there.
11 - Brad Marchand - Florida 5 years x $4.5M AAV - I think he feels at home with the Panthers and is willing to take the big discount to stay there.
10 - Mikael Granlund - Dallas 4 years x $4M AAV - I think he's been a good fit in Dallas, and no other team can use him right.
9 - Claude Giroux - Ottawa 3 years x $3M AAV - He's been happy at home, and I think he'd take the discount to remain there.
8 - Jonathan Drouin - Colorado 6 years x $5.5M AAV - He's been an excellent fit on the Avalanche and in my opinion has earned the money.
7 - Aaron Ekblad - Florida 8 years x $5M AAV - I think Ekblad wants to play for the Panthers and remain there, could get more but I think him staying in Florida would be best for all parties.
6 - Brock Boeser - Minnesota 8 years x $8.5M AAV - Boeser returning home would likely be his preference, and could bring great chemistry for Kaprizov.
5 - Patrick Kane - Detroit 2 years x $5M AAV - Kane seems to feel a fit with Detroit, and has been valuable for them. But I think there's no other preference for him right now, but if not Detroit I could see him ending up in Vegas.
4 - Sam Bennett - Florida 8 years x $8M AAV - Bennett has been a big part of the Panthers, and it seems he wants to stay there.
3 - Nikolaj Ehlers - Anaheim Ducks 8 years x $10M AAV - Ehlers may prefer to be in a competitive environment, and Anaheim would likely be that team just after the addition of Ehlers making their top-six the most unstoppable in the NHL where he's likely get a bigger role. I also believe he'll be the player who gets overpaid this off-season.
2 - John Tavares - Toronto 5 years $7M AAV - He doesn't want to leave Toronto.
1 - Mitch Marner - Vegas 8 years x $12M AAV - I think Marner needs less pressure on him off the ice, but I believe him going to Vegas would benefit him as it's rumoured to be his preferred location and teams could be offering him more money, but I think Utah makes a huge swing as well. But leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs would be the best for him.
